Curriculum
Fundations -- We are learning about v-e syllables and v-e exceptions. We are also reviewing r-controlled vowel sounds.
Writing -- We have begun our nonfiction writing unit and are preparing to write a book about planets. This week students were assigned a planet to research, and we practiced note-taking skills. Over the next few weeks we will use various sources to research specific facts and details about our planet, organize our research in two-column notes, and begin to write our chapter planet books.
Reading -- We have begun our non-fiction unit. We have learned about various text features and how text features help us to learn about a topic and navigate the text. We are also practicing finding the main idea and details of a text, and how to differentiate between details that support the main idea and those that do not.
Math -- We are learning various multiplication strategies, including multiplication squares and multiplication arrays. We used the arrays to prove the turn-around rule, or Commutative Property of Multiplication. We reviewed graphing and learned to use data to create a pictograph. We will take our end of unit assessment after we return from the Thanksgiving break.
Science -- We are learning about the life cycles of plants and animals. We have planted lima bean, black bean, pinto bean and grass seeds and have been observing them grow over the past few weeks. We are also comparing their growth to the growth of seeds we put in a plastic bag taped to the window. We also created cartoons illustrating the life cycle of frogs.
